Schengen insurance: the €30,000 minimum and embassy requirements
Article 15 of the EU Visa Code (Regulation 810/2009) sets the travel insurance requirements for all short-stay Schengen visa applications. The policy must:
- Provide medical cover of at least €30,000.
- Be valid in all Schengen countries, not only the country you apply to.
- Cover the entire length of stay stated in your application.
- Include emergency medical treatment, hospital treatment, and repatriation for medical reasons or in case of death.
Our Schengen policies are designed around these requirements. The official source is the European Commission website, and the full Schengen checklist is in our guide to Schengen visa requirements.

How to choose the cheapest travel medical insurance online
The price depends on four factors: trip length, the traveller’s age, territorial scope and the cover limit. To pay the lowest price without your file being rejected:
- Choose the right duration. Your exact trip dates plus one extra day on each side, not a full month for a two-week trip.
- Don’t go below €30,000 for a Schengen visa, and don’t pay extra for cover the embassy doesn’t require unless you want more protection.
- Check the territorial scope. A single-country policy is cheaper, but it is rejected for a Schengen application.
- Read the deductible. Some cheap policies make you pay part of every medical bill; a policy with no deductible is better.
- Compare the final price including fees, not just the advertised price.
What the insurance covers and what it doesn't
| Covers | Usually does not cover |
|---|---|
| Emergency medical treatment and prescribed medicines during the trip | Chronic or pre-existing conditions |
| Hospital treatment and emergency surgery | Routine or planned check-ups and treatment |
| Repatriation for medical reasons or in case of death | Dangerous sports unless specified |
| Emergency dental treatment within the policy limits | Trip cancellation, flight delays or lost luggage |
The exact details and limits for each item are in the policy terms you receive with your insurance.

Travel insurance FAQ
Is health insurance mandatory for a Schengen visa?
Yes. The EU Visa Code requires travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 cover, valid in all Schengen countries for the entire stay. Without it, the application is not accepted.
What is the minimum cover for Schengen visa insurance?
€30,000 for emergency medical treatment, hospital treatment and repatriation. You can choose higher cover, but less is not accepted.
Does the insurance cover medical emergencies?
Yes. It covers emergency treatment, hospital treatment, urgent surgery and repatriation for medical reasons, within the cover limits stated in the policy.
Is the insurance valid in all countries covered by the visa?
A Schengen policy is valid in every country of the Schengen Area. For other countries, we issue the policy for the country you are travelling to, or a wider scope if your trip covers more than one region.
Does travel health insurance cover COVID-19?
Our policies cover emergency treatment for infectious diseases, including COVID-19, like any other emergency. Check the terms of your policy for details and limits.
Can I buy insurance after booking my embassy appointment?
Yes, that is the usual order. What matters is that the policy is printed with your file on the day of the appointment, and that it starts on your travel date, not the purchase date.
Must the insurance be issued by an approved company?
Yes. It must be issued by a licensed insurer and show its name, the policy number and the emergency number. Our policies are issued by Atlas, AXA and Allianz.
Can the insurance be extended after it is issued?
Yes, in most cases, if you request the extension before the current policy ends. Send us the extension dates through our contact page, and we issue an endorsement or a new policy that continues from the first.
Can I get a refund if my visa is refused?
Yes. If you send us the refusal letter before the policy start date, we cancel it and refund the amount minus the service fee. Details are in our refund policy.
Can older travellers be insured?
Yes, up to age 80, with 50% added to the price for travellers aged 66 and over. For travellers over 80, contact us before ordering.
