Austria is one of the most popular summer destinations for Gulf families because it combines a historic capital, lakes, mountains and a mild climate within short distances. This 8-day itinerary starts in Vienna, continues to Salzburg and Hallstatt, and ends in Zell am See and Kaprun, with a version ready for your Schengen visa file.
Best time to visit Austria
June to September is the season for lakes and mountains and the most popular time for families. December to March is ski season and the time of Vienna’s Christmas markets. Visa appointments get busy at the end of the school year, so apply 6 to 8 weeks before you travel.

Getting around and family tips
The train between Vienna and Salzburg is fast and comfortable. Mountain areas such as Hallstatt and Kaprun are easier with a rental car, especially with children and luggage. Many families fly home from Munich because it is closer to Zell am See than Vienna; this does not change the responsible embassy as long as all your nights are in Austria. Book hotels in Zell am See early, as they fill up in July and August.
Visa and trip documents
All nights are in Austria, so you apply to the Austrian embassy through the VFS centres. Details are in our guide to the Austria visa for Saudis and residents. You stay in three cities, so make sure your hotel bookings cover all seven nights without gaps, and that your travel insurance covers every family member.
We prepare this itinerary with your own dates, together with hotel bookings in Vienna, Salzburg and Zell am See.
