Netherlands Visa: Documents and Steps from Saudi Arabia and Egypt

Netherlands Visa: Documents and Steps from Saudi Arabia and Egypt

Contents of the Guide

The Netherlands tourist visa is a short-stay Schengen visa issued by the Dutch embassy, allowing you to stay up to 90 days in any 180 days in all Schengen countries. You apply if the Netherlands is your main destination, from the country where you legally reside. The Netherlands is known for closely reviewing the financial file and purpose of travel, so this guide focuses on the points that decide the outcome: the documents, the bank statement, refusal reasons and how to object.

Where to apply for a Netherlands visa from Saudi Arabia

The Dutch Embassy in Riyadh receives Schengen applications through VFS Global centres in Riyadh, Jeddah, Khobar and Aramco Dhahran, which only accept applicants residing in Saudi Arabia. Only diplomatic passport holders apply at the embassy directly. The Dutch government advises booking your appointment yourself without intermediaries to avoid unnecessary costs.

How to apply for a Netherlands visa

  1. Start from the official website: open the visa page for your country of residence on netherlandsworldwide.nl, and follow the link to the authorised visa centre there.
  2. Fill in the application form with details exactly as in your passport, and book your biometrics appointment.
  3. Prepare your documents in the order given on the centre’s website, using the same checklist.
  4. Attend in person, even if you are under 18, and pay the visa fee (€90 for adults) and the centre’s service fee.
  5. Track your application with your reference number until you collect your passport.

The general Schengen steps are explained in detail in our guide to how to apply for a Schengen visa.

Required documents

  • A passport valid for 3 months after your return, issued within 10 years, with two blank pages.
  • A signed application form and a recent photo.
  • National ID, or a valid iqama for residents.
  • An employer letter or commercial register.
  • A recent, stamped bank statement.
  • A return flight reservation and a hotel booking for every night.
  • Travel medical insurance with €30,000 cover valid in all Schengen countries.
  • An itinerary if your trip covers more than one country; you can use our Netherlands itinerary.
  • For family visits: an invitation letter, and the Dutch proof of sponsorship and/or accommodation form may be required if your host will cover your costs.

How much do you need in your bank statement?

The Netherlands sets a reference amount per day of stay to prove financial means, updated periodically on the Dutch government website. The practical approach: multiply the daily amount by the number of days in your trip, and make sure your balance covers it with a comfortable margin after travel costs. More important than the figure itself is normal account activity: a regular salary, and no sudden unexplained deposits before you apply. If someone else will cover your costs, attach their bank statement and the sponsorship form.

How long does a Netherlands visa take?

The usual time is 15 days from submitting your application, and it can extend to 45 days in some cases. Apply 3 to 6 weeks before you travel, and earlier in summer or during tulip season between March and May.

Netherlands visa refusal reasons and how to object

  • Financial means: a balance or income that doesn’t cover the trip.
  • Purpose of travel: an unclear plan, or bookings with conflicting dates.
  • Intention to return: weak ties to your home country, such as no stable job.
  • Insurance: a policy that doesn’t cover all Schengen countries or the whole stay.

The refusal letter states the reason and the deadline for an objection. Objections are made in writing, with documents that directly address the reason. In many cases, a new application with a stronger file is faster than an objection.

Extending a Schengen visa in the Netherlands

A tourist visa is only extended in exceptional cases, such as illness or cancelled flights, and the request is made to the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) before the visa expires.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to give fingerprints every time?

No. Fingerprints stay in the VIS system for 59 months, but you may still be asked to attend in person to hand in your file.

Can I apply from a country other than my home country?

Yes, if you have a valid legal residence there, such as a resident of Saudi Arabia.

Does the Netherlands require a paid ticket?

No. A verifiable flight reservation is enough, and it is best not to buy a ticket before the visa is issued.
