UAE citizens are exempt from the Schengen visa for short stays, but millions of UAE residents of other nationalities need a visa, and they can apply directly from the UAE as long as their residence visa is valid, without returning to their home country. This guide covers the requirements specific to residents, the documents, the application centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, and tips for the summer season when appointments fill up quickly.
Residence requirements for applying from the UAE
- A valid UAE residence visa: most embassies require it to remain valid for at least 3 months after you return from the Schengen Area.
- Emirates ID: the original and a copy.
- Length of residence: if your residence is very recent, the embassy may ask for proof of your stability in the UAE, or ask you to apply from your home country. Check the requirements of the embassy you are applying to.
Required documents
- A passport valid for 3 months after your return and issued within the last 10 years.
- A signed application form and a recent photo.
- A salary certificate or no-objection certificate (NOC) from your employer stating your job, salary and leave, or a trade licence for business owners.
- A UAE bank statement for the last 3 to 6 months, depending on the embassy.
- A return flight reservation from Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and a hotel booking for every night.
- Travel medical insurance with €30,000 cover valid in all Schengen countries.
- A travel itinerary if your trip covers more than one country.
The full general list is in our guide to Schengen visa requirements.
Application centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi
Schengen embassies in the UAE receive applications through VFS, TLS or BLS centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, depending on the country. Start from the visa page on the website of the country’s embassy in Abu Dhabi or its consulate in Dubai, and follow the official booking link there. Some embassies assign jurisdiction by the emirate you live in, so check this before booking. The detailed steps are in our guide to how to apply for a Schengen visa.
Fees and processing time
The official visa fee is €90 for adults, paid in dirhams at the approved exchange rate, plus the centre’s service fee. Processing usually takes 15 days and can extend to 45 days. Details are in our guide to Schengen visa fees.
Tips for the summer season
- Book your appointment at least 6 to 8 weeks before travel, as summer appointments in the UAE are among the busiest.
- Renew your residence visa or passport before applying if they are close to expiry.
- Order your reservations one or two days before your appointment so they are valid.
- For families: book appointments for all members in the same booking, and prepare a complete file for each person.

Frequently asked questions

No. UAE citizens are exempt from the Schengen visa for short stays, subject to any new pre-travel electronic registration systems.
Can I apply in Dubai if I live in Abu Dhabi?
For most countries yes, but some embassies assign jurisdiction by emirate, so check the embassy’s website.
Is a bank statement from my home country accepted?
It can be attached as supporting evidence, but embassies prefer a statement from your country of residence showing your monthly salary.
